Altered Books?

As per Wikipedia “An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into something else. An altered book artist takes a book (old, new, recycled or multiple) and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, gold-leafs, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks, ephemera, or other three-dimensional objects. Some change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art. Antique or Victorian art is frequently used, probably because it is easier to avoid copyright issues. Altered books are shown and sold in art galleries and on the Internet.”

I am so excited about this. I have been wanting to scrapbook for a while, and I love to journal or rather talk on paper. I also love to craft, decorate and cook.  Altered books let’s me do it all in one book and with the kids. I have a box of old discarded books. Alexa, Seth and I fished through it and each picked a few hard covered children’s book and went to town embellishing. This is like scrapbooking without  the fear of whether something is acid or lignin-free. I think it’s shabby-chic look is charming and adds to the value as years go by. We are making “All about me” and “My Favorite Things” type books. We are covering pages with construction or plain paper and added pictures, magazine, catalog, newspaper, sale flyers, and our own writings and bible verses to it.

Aside from math this is all we’ve done all day. I would like to begin a few traveling journals in the near future to pass round to our friends. Check out these links and give your kids creative writing or journaling a jumpstart.

  2. I did one of the Scrapbooking Studies before. It was a lot of fun and definitely a new experience for me. I love being crafty, I just don’t generally do it in a group setting, lol! The fellowship with the other ladies in the study was priceless. Can’t wait to see what you do!
